The first two times I saw people wearing the Sony Walkman(TM), they were walking through buildings at MIT, so I assumed they were on self-guided tours of the school, because I had seen a similar device at a museum. The third time I saw someone walking wearing a Walkman, they were outside walking away from the campus, so I assumed they were lost.

She says "we wouldn't dare make sound in our own right", that we're "we're totally cut off from it except as consumers" - it's powerful stuff but it's dead to us until we make sound ourselves, regardless of outside judgements. There's an irony in following someone's words about not following someone's music, but even following No Music Day is a following. I hope it makes me a more understanding listener and creator along the way, but that's not why I'm doing it.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: My husband and I are singers and our whole family loves and thrives on music. Enjoyment of and expression through music are part of being human. But, I\'m sure we do take it for granted. We even have to learn to ignore it because of the way the media permeate our lives. Our first child is named Cecilia, and I think this is a great way to draw more attention to the feast day of the patron saint of music. It\'s like a fast before a holiday.

I hope to honor the artists and musicians by increasing my respect for music through deprivation. I honestly can't remember any span of time more than three hours without music. This will be a huge challenge for me.

Will it make me appreciate it more? Crave it? Maybe nothing at all. Who knows. In a time when advertisers make you feel the odd-one-out for not listening to music AT ALL TIMES, (look at every single ad. You cant even buy a phone without "never mind whether you get a signal, this new phone holds 8 squillion mp3's!" type messages. Even though it sounds like an interesting idea, music is in my head 24/7 even if I'm not actually, physically playing it! I can't stop it. I do think that music means less to people these days - people don't have a relationship with music, its just something they download to fill their ipods. Maybe people consume music and are surrounded by music more than ever before, but, paradoxically, music means less to people. I don't think NO MUSIC DAY helps the matter in any way, though. The idea is good, but flawed - sounds too self-indulgent to me. We should have an ONLY MUSIC DAY, where people would do nothing but listening to and playing music. No work, no rush hour traffic, no fighting, no war, no buying music - just music, pure and simple. That'd be better.

It almost makes the licence fee seem worthwhile, great to hear presenters out of thier comfort zone and not being abale to rely on music to fill time. I will not be listening to music today, as I work in the media and relish the thought of a day where we can take a break from the constant bombardment of a blatantly over commercialised product. It makes you wonder if the best has now past and we need to understand this and move on. Music, like art, has a place in our lives but why look at a badly painted picture all day, badly produced music is just the same a waste of time. Will I miss the music today....NO

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I live in music. Fasting is a great way to cultivate thankfulness, and tomorrow is Thanksgiving. I've had St. Cecilia's day on my calendar for years, but never really had a proper way to mark that observance. No Music Day seems like the right way to do it.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Avoiding music however I can. I won't hum (botched that momentarily before I caught myself), I won't sing, I won't play. The speakers will remain off. For the long drive tonight, a book on tape.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I think under different circumstances I would be observing NO MUSIC DAY, but the day is new (it's almost 7am and I've been up for almost two hours) and I have accidentally hummed "Rehab" and "Take Five", perhaps a Justified Ancients Of MuMu ode of how I shouldn't take five, but rather I should take what I want. Bad, I've already messed up my day. I do like the idea of going away from music, and then being "cleansed" with a reward after the full day is over. For now, I will try to see how long I can make it until... who knows.

In short, we have become desensitized to it. So that I may be again be moved to tears by Loreena McKinnett, fired up by Led Zepplin or made to smile by Vivaldi, today I will not turn on any radios, leave the TV off, and not fire up the iPod. Tomorrow, I will again bask in the joy of having my soul stirred again by Beethoven and laugh my ass off to They Might Be Giants.
