I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Its an experiment. Why not.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: While getting ready for work I had Fosters Home Imaginary Friends on sans sound. Prooved to be as funny if not even more weird. Once at work I switched off the CD players to see how long it took people to realize they were off. Surprisingly; quite a while. This is all making me question whats defined as music vs. what "silence", and the sounds inside of, it are capable of replacing.

Christopher

Lex Luthor
21/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I like the challenge of avoiding the ubiquitous everyday musical pap. I am paticularly keen to get through a whole day without hearing Coldpaly.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Avoiding all spaces where I might hear music, not playing CDs and turning the sound off on my PC. The radio will be on Radio 4 and I won't be watching the television apart from University Challenge (I plan to skip the music round).

21/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I'm a sucker for just doing things on a whim. I have to say that I can type rhymically though so thank goodness nobody's going to start calling drummers musicians. Or was that DJs, I get so confused?

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Well, I will from now on. I listened to a sampler from the DiN label earlier on but can probably still count myself as in full observance. Or should that be observence? Have we a working definition of music yet, so I can be sure? I mean, I have to admit that there are times when the almost imperceptible sound of nylon panties being slowly drawn down over long legs is the greatest music I've ever heard. And, for a long time, I had major doubts about Stravinsky, which would make me, presumably, very ignorant.

I have one of these
21/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: It does not yet cost. It does not yet profit. It does not yet fail.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: At 5:45am I sat quitely in a Public Park - as this is the nearest to No Music I am likely to get. Still noisy.
Now everything I am obliged to hear seems loud. Nothing but loudness is not music.

martin
21/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Music serves only to highlight emotional states. Whether its lyrics are boasting about someone having a better life than yourself or some evil shit coming up with a pop hook so life affirming it makes my whole situation seem that much bleaker. It's a powerful force that needs to be halted occasionally.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: rueing the fact that I forgot about it and spending the day listening to drivel. I observe it mentally and in spirit, but sadly Winamp's running...

Tom Cole

Sorry. If I'd had a bit of notice I'd have avoided it totally, but trying my best. My music at home is now off and I am surrounded by the incesent hum of computer fans.

Bob Dobbs
21/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: the broad spectrum of art (over time) will pretty-much reflects life; its changes, its advances, its positive and negative effects. By observing NO MUSIC DAY I will temporarily slow life's inexorable creep towards blandness and inanity. Art=life=news. Neil Postman was right.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: not whistling Jeff Buckley tunes to my work collegues

Bob Farrell
21/11/2005

Andrew Whittaker
21/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Everyone and his dog listens to their own little selection that is loaded on their iPod and played back at random, avoiding talking to others, avoiding listening to music with others, and letting their tastes be dulled by the repetition of the same 4-6GB. What happened to listening to an album all the way through? Music should be more than background noise while you commute. iPods reduce everything to elevator muzak. Besides, most new music is crap anyway.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Leaving my headphones out and listening to hundreds of programmers playing a random rhythym on their keyboards.

Jonathan Wakely
21/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Music isn't a background. And when it is used as one, the music simply isn't good enough.
And Bert and Ernie are funny. Especially in a department store.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Refusing to play Il Divo, Katie Melua, Norah Jones and any other "coffee-table-background-music" in the department store (cd-department) where I work, and I will be trying to play Bert & Ernie instead. (I hope I still work there tomorrow though)

Christopher
21/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: it got me thinking.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: continuing the long, life-interrupting task of ripping my cd collection to hard-drive - for the second time.
in doing so my love for each cd is tested to the limits - is it really necessary for this in my life?
mostly it's been no, but in delving through the depths of your life/mind/collection you find pearls you may have overlooked.
and one pearl is worth a lot of shit these days.

simon

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Silence is a Virtue in this busy dying world.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Refusing to listen to any rhythmic sounds. If they persist earplugs will be enforced.

Raoul Gaston
20/11/2005

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: No special actions, non-actions or means. Each month I have, on average, three days that are very silent. No music or radio, perhaps news on tv in the evening, but otherwise those days I avoid all broadcast, films, internet, shopping and events.
Good for your mind, hearing and sensibility in general.
Thanks for the initiative, 'What do you want from music?' is a very important question. Keep it alive.

Zingzing Gecko
20/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I went past the 'No Music Day' billboard more times then i care to remember in the last few weeks.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Updating my iPod just after midnight, listening to said iPod on the way to & from work. In doing so driving past the 'No Music Day' billboard and being amused by the irony.
Then later in the evening going to a gig @ the Barfly, as part of "Liverpool Music Week" ...again, amsused by the irony!

Chris
20/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I haven't read a decent book lately.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Telling my neighbour that if he plays Jerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" three times in a row at full volume in the middle of the afternoon while I'm trying to work again I will break into his flat while he's at work and smash every piece of sound reproduction equipment he owns into at least 17 pieces.

20/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I keep going back to the same artists to re-create the past enjoyment I've had listening to them. I need to keep this language special by not taking it for granted. This new holiday falls in the week of our American holiday of Thanksgiving. I celebrate Thanksgiving by staying at home, enjoying quiet time with my wife and not running errands or other bullshit. I find it highly appropriate to utilize No Music Day as a way to STOP, appreciate and give thanks for the role music plays in my life.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Leaving the car cd changer off, not playing any records, leaving my discman at home, not playing the guitar to kill time as my internet pages load and not playing with any of my musicallly-oriented children's toys.

Rudi Thornburgh
20/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: It is essential that we evoke the lost spirit of invention that is currently untraceable in the music makers of the early 21st century

Daniel O'Sullivan
20/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: isn't it ironic (or isn't it deliberate)? Nov 22nd is St. Cecilia's Day - the day of all days for music, from the frivolous to the sublime. Music is the highest and most significant of mankind's intellectual contributions (and I am, seriously, ranking it above all technological issues) - it reaches in at a more profound level than the written or spoken word, it can reach across ages and cultures, it needs no understanding to be appreciated yet infinitely repays close study.
In order to value music, form and answer questions. - If you don't agree with visuals (MTV, VHS, shows?, concerts?), don't watch - it doesn't matter - writing as someone who does not own a TV and has not watched ANY broadcast TV in 6 years, except accidentally (my choice, no sermon intended)
- If you're looking for music to express something new, where are you looking? And are you waiting for someone to say 'this is new'? Have you listened to 1500 years worth of music and found nothing to stimulate? - Is music the same as 'intended sounds', and does the new consequently mean new sound worlds, or just new arrangements of chords on a guitar?
Music matters (to me) - I listen to it, think about it, talk about it, read and write about it, perform and compose it - what more infinite variation could anybody want?
Please note - I am being serious, I am not aiming to be pretentious, I am trying to summarize my thoughts simply on what is, for me, immensely complex.
As in all things, don't be content with being a sheep, a reactionary, a flag-waver, a pall-bearer - be an individual.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: (possibly) listening to no music OR (probably) making positive choices about what I hear - no passive music in the background, no switching the radio on and just listening, no music while I work, only music that I must hear (as my non-negotiable job requires for approx. 5 minutes of my day), only music that matters (Bach, Berio, Britten, Bartok - no apologies for 'art music' - you get the picture).

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I'm slowly becoming addicted to the Itunes music store. All those lovely West Coast alternative bands. Yummy.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Listening to the tinnitus that music gave me in the first place - cheers, music! I owe you a beer! I shall also attempt to think without cracking up.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: My ears and mind are in pain.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Leaving my mini disc at home and enjoying the sound of the traffic on my way to work.

David Hancock
19/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I need a day without manipulated emotions, without the beat and the croon, and no chance of rocking down and getting back up. I'm gonna stay still, keep it low, and firm up my expectations, my conceptions of what music does for me.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Leaving my iPod at home, turning the stereo off, unplugging my speakers, avoiding stores, silencing my cell, not turning on the TV, maybe taking a long solitary walk.

Lina
19/11/2005

George
19/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I find it easiest to think what I want from music by sitting in a concert and not listening. Hearing perhaps, but not listening. I end up writing music in this situation, which is I guess motivated partly by me trying to say what I want from music, rather than listening to what is going on around me. So whilst it's unfortunate that I have to go to two concerts on Monday, I will attempt not to listen and participate, thinking instead about what I want from music.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: going to two concerts.

James Saunders

Dirk Markham
18/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: it's a good idea, I guess, although it'd be even cooler to have a No Noise At All day, or at the very least an Everyone Please Stop Talking day. If the point of the exercise is to figure out what you want from music, why not take a week to think about it?
also, "figure out what you want?"

that's like telling music to sit in its room and think about what it's done, and not come out until it says it's sorry. but that's cool too.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: not listening to music, provided I remember which day I'm supposed to do this on.

Leah
18/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: The slate needs to be wiped clean. A day without the structured sound of m***c may be exactly what I need to clear my head. Funnily enough, my brain has been edging to this conclusion and I'm glad that someone has said it out loud...

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Not listening to music. I'm not even going to work that day so no pumped out crappy radio will be thrust upon me. I will not go into record shops for fear of hearing. I will read. I will write. I may watch some Tv (carefully selected of cause).

Alex Riding
18/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I have over 500 CDs and an obsession with 6 Music on the Freeview box. Drying out for a day will be good for me.

Chris H.
17/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: my soul aches for more than I am hearing, I exist on mere scraps that titlate me for a few days and then bore me.I sincerely doubt that there is an artist (except myself of course)around the corner ready to aurally challenge the world and take us on a ride to rival those before....Even when something new emerges, it is usually trying so desperately to be new, that I stifle a yawn. All the 'in' references and influences reek of desperation. BIN IT ALL - INSTRUMENTS AND ALL, AND LETS START AGAIN....

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: putting my fingers in my ears for the same amount of time i would spend listening to music on any given day. Any sound, or the absence of sound and any observed feelings will be recorded by writing them on a blank cd disc, stored with other cd's, and added to every 21st November.

17/11/2005

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Having just about every song you could possibly have the urge to listen to readily accessible to you - on the bus, at home, in the park, on a plane, whilst having a shit - is just far, far, far too easy. Where's the anticipation? Where's the waiting? Shut up, sit still and leave your accessories alone! YOU HAVE NO MESSAGES!!

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Purchasing, or preferably borrowing, an ipod. Or perhaps making one out of an old cardboard box and some felt tip pens (I've got a silver one). The ipod will have no music on it, and I will take it with me, with headphones attached, and listen to silence all day. (Hang on ... is silence music? Isn't all sound music?).

Ray

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I shall do this in remembrance of the days when the music industry dared venture down new paths, rather than force feed us an endless regurgitation of the same crud.
I shall use my 24 hours of abstinence to think back to a time when it was exciting to turn on the radio or walk into a record shop.
Knowing that the revolution will not come by itself I shall also spend No Music Day praying that a large meteor will crash into the Earth and eradicate the powers that be, thus forcing a new beginning upon us.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: listening to nothing but the sound of my own breath.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I've just been listening to people in my office say how good Madonna's new stuff is and how much they like it.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: using the flickering of my monitor to induce an impenetrable trance (maybe someone will turn it off for me at the end of the day).

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: as I hope to discover something I didn't know before about music and what it means to me. I suspect it will be a challenging day indeed.
I'm also doing it because I think it's a fresh action to take as I spin my wheels over the same beloved terrain. I'll give it a go (or a stop) and maybe new terrain will reveal itself.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by:

- Removing all recordings from my bedroom

- No radio during transit

- No MP3s while at work

- No tinkering with audio software

- Letting everyone around me know it's NO MUSIC DAY and that it may be in the best interest of music and ourselves to not listen for a day.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: by not listening to any music well for a start I wont be trying to come up with some smart arsed reason for taking part in No Music Day. As far as I am concerned its not a fucking joke, its just a good idea that I want to be part of and I hope all these sods with their clever reason for taking part in it, dont put off other people like me from putting there names down. I've got a job to do, I can't piss off and climb mountains. I just want a break from all the shit music that is every where.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Listening to even more music than usual. I know how I want music to be different, as I fool around a little with it, and I can create how I want things different than the standard.
Good luck to you all, by the way, how are you going to disconnect your brains, because sometimes, in total silence, my mind plays music, and I bet yours will too. Pencils ready, ok, poke out your eardrums!!!

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I am sick of new music days, of bands that release two or three brilliant early releases, and then you trot out in a habit to buy the rest of their back catalogue as and when it appears. I am currently selling all but a tiny amount of my music collection, and will use the cash to get away from vinyl and CD obsession and into the broad uplands of New Life. I do not own an Ipod.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Listening to Radio 4 all day (signature tunes accepted) and selling records and CDs on the internet that I have owned for years.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Larry told me to.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: There are two claims in Mr Larry Benito Pringle s remarks: (i) that MTV music videos tend not to feature much good music; and (ii) that music should be for the ears. I take the latter to imply the stronger claim that music should be solely for the ears. If this is Mr Pringle s intention, any visual action associated with music is to be considered a distraction. The idea that music should be essentially disembodied suggests that we should always close our eyes and stay still while listening (if we are to listen properly).
I suggest instead that visual actions associated with music whether of the marching band, the stage musical, break-dancing, or the jazz face (in which performers and listeners alike screw up their face in a strange ecstasy) give music much of its context. Music is frequently composed to elicit (or evoke the thought of) certain kinds of action along with the feelings that might accompany them. I don t find this disturbing as a general truth. What is perhaps disturbing to Benito is that the images on MTV are much more evocative than the music. If so, turn the sound off. If both image and sound are not to your liking, turn both off.
A complementary crusade for Mr Pringle would be to remove music from films and TV programs except where the music is part of the action (such as a scene in a night club). This is the flipside of Benito s first point about music videos: namely, that much vacuous film is made compelling to its audience by means of incidental music. Of course, my remarks about music and visual context would equally well apply here too.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: all music I hear sounds like something that I have heard before. I want to hear something fresh and different that makes me feel emmotions that I didn't know I had instead of the emmotions that I have felt a thousand times before.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: I will be observing No Music Day by spending the day trying to imagine what a music that I had never heard before would sound like.
