I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: i love music. And I hope to be able to love it even more by re-calibrating my perception (just like I've found that fasting is a great way of learning to re-appreciate food!). NO MUSIC DAY to me is a phenomenological exploration of my own relations to music and how that is connected to places. More generally, I think it's extremely important to break the "mental equal sign" between "music" and "recordings", because music is inherently performance and as such a subjective action.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: actively avoiding music, even situations where it reaches me passively, but still physically remain in places (like my home) where I'm most used to the continous musical stream.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: the 19211 songs in my itunes library are starting to sound the same, and that is absurd.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: sitting in silence.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: i read about it in a magazine one morning and it was told in such a good way. something about that we doesn't notice the music anymore. that it had became like a wallpaper... it just is.. sry for my bad english...

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: not listening or making any music. Don t think so many people in Sweden is observing NO MUSIC DAY It was hard not to listen to music in school when everybody else turned their music on loud just because I didn't want to hear.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: As a reflector the change is good for the hearing. To start from a fresh set of ears in looking out for new sounds for new possibilities.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: By not working on the soundtrack to the film I submited in the current Changing Ipswich exhibtion. The exhibition is the soundtrack over the several days whilst it is being exhibited.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Anything that makes the world consider the place and importance of music is a fantastic antidote to media filled with sport, politics, repetitive news and weather, game shows and poor TV for kids!

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: By playing something really superb like Pink Floyd's Shine on Crazy Diamond, currently playing as I type, or Schubert's final Mass, later this evening, ABBA's incredible musical narrative poem 'The Day before you came" maybe, a chance to fill the soul while much of the non-music inflicted on us by the media and commercial record companies is silent. Good music needs no silence to make the point.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I am a musician and because it's hard.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I'LL NEVER MAKE IT TO MIDNIGHT, WITHDRAWL SYMPTOMS, FRIDGE WAS HUMMING IN F#, UNPLUGGED IT NOW MY FREEZER TRAY IS DEFROSTING AND I NOW HAVE HALF A BAG OF INEDIBLE GARDEN PEAS AND WATER ON MY KITCHEN FLOOR.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: I spent today rocking up with my iPod & some speakers in classrooms, courtyards, hallways and elevators around college.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Fleet sent this link to me. It's like fasting -- the spirit and body feel the absence, and the pain of its loss focuses the mind and spirit elsewhere.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: I did it yesterday. No music. Just work.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Music is everywere. Not because we like to listen to it but because we don't hear it at all. It is brainwashing. Many are afraid of silence, but silence make it possible to enjoy mueic when you choose to.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Telling everybody I meet about this site. Then we next year will join in observing NO MUSIC DAY by listering.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I listen to too much music and it does my head in - I love music but it's become an obsession, I think it'll do me good to go without for a day. Also I just want to see whether I can do it as it's very unusual for me not to have music on all the time.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Attempting to avoid intentionally listening to music. I failed because I forgot it was today and switched on MTV this morning, however I've done pretty well since then. I've overheard odd bits of other people's music but not too much. I'm now listening to Resonance instead of mp3s as I normally would be.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: I really don't think that this is a clever project. Looks more like a reaction to the already established 'Music Day'(even though I personally find this idea stupid as well) without any good reason. Just leave everybody's music alone! Opeth is the answer...

21/11/2006

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I'm not. Because this is fucking stupid. I barely go an hour without music let alone a day. Music is the best thing humans have produced. It should be embraced more than it is not ignored. LISTEN TO MUSIC!

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: I won't

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I hope that this day will have a great impact on my life. While my life constantly includes some kind of sound - whitch mostly means music - it most have an important role in the meeting of human beeings. I want to see and meet people without a soundtrack.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: the simpel reason that I¥m courius about how music will sound and feel like tomorrow. That might include TV because the sound in the box is not pure music but it provides me beats and it makes my toes move. I will also leave my ipod alone to se how my thoughts will evolve during dishing.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Music needs to be rescued, in this age of IPODS, MP3s (and Im guilty as all of us), though I dont have an nme sponsored IPOD, by the way, how did you accesorise your IPOD after going to a gig? (this is a question in nme most weeks)(i also love nme by the way) but this is my argument - where has music gone? Music that meant something, that broke our hearts, gave us hope, sparked revolutions, I tell you where it is, its bloody soundtracking my journey to work on the bus everyday, because it makes me feel comfortable and stops me thinking. Today has changed that, I have been forced to think, I have had songs in my head instead of in my ears on a constant playlist that has drawn the emotion out of nearly every album or song I own. Anyway, rant over, try something tomorrow - only listen to songs on your mp3 player you havent listened to before, or put it on random and play each song that comes on ALL the way through, fade out and everything, no matter what song it is, cool or uncool. Then allow yourself one song - you will know when to time this with your approach to work as you walk/bus/train/drive it everyday. That one song you allow yourself will almost sound like the first time you heard it.
Long live no music day.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Not listening to any music, not charging my MP3 battery and trying to convince anybody who will listen that music has to be preserved, and that no music day is the perfect vehicle to defend what has been the most important thing in my life (outside of family etc) ever.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: there are only a couple small areas left in the world where music is only heard by the common folk once a year as part of a ceremony - can you f-ing imagine what that's like? the aural equivalent of staring at the sun after spending a year in a mineshaft.... I'm looking forward to expanding this to a year-long event.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: not listening to the voices in my head and avoiding public places.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Well... I must admit at around 8.30 pm I fucked up. My 3 year old was over-tired and getting twisted. So I clicked, in total innocence, on the "Chill Out" MP3 on the laptop and tried to zone her out with the "Water Ambience" visualisation effect on Windows Media Player. 10 minutes into the piece and it dawned on me what I had just done. Strange that... as I had never tried this before with the kids. It just came to me. Maybe next year.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: realising the numerous times I have thumbed through my vinyl or CD's and said "what a lot of bollocks". I do it too often. Never finding just the right tune or song or album to fit my mood -whether to highten or subdue it. Now I have a good reason not to select, or even attempt to select any music whatsoever for a whole 24 hours. Sheer bliss.

Jade

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Because nowadays it is music "FOR THE PEOPLE - BY THE PEOPLE!". Myspace and other online sites are destroying creativity and risk taking and all we are hearing now is the lowest common denominator - banal, safe, market researched SHITE! I watched "Last Train to Transcentral" performance on TV the other night and found it hilarious, brilliant, offensive and awful in equal doses. Music needs to provoke these emotions to evolve.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Wishing and praying that I hear something tomorrow that doesn't sound like some Record Company Boss's santitized little child. Something that FUCKING ROCKS!

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: two prespectives. in a art kind of dada againt idea, the no music day functions because if we follow strictlly the no music day 21st of november will be a very poor day for mankind because there is no music. The absence of music make us wishing and thinking about muscic. And that make us give the importance to the music and to the pleasure we are blessed for listening, playing, creating music.
If this "no music day" was created by people who dislike music or is only a very nonsence idea created just for fun...well i¥ve got some own ideas like "say no to crappy ideas day"

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I love music- but it is being cheapened and reduced to a worthless commodity more and more. People hear alot of music nowadays but so few truly listen.
The phenomenon of people walking around with a constant supply of music from their ipods to 'block out reality' is quite disturbing. Everyone seems to want to live in their own little world whilst showing less and less regard for their fellow humans around them. MP3 players are great for gadget lovers, but terrible for the true music lover. For me, my love for music is now basically an addiction, so it's important to stop and think what music really means to me in these over-soundtracked times.
And was it really necessary to have 'Dreams' by Gabrielle being piped into the public urinals i used last weekend?

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Not listening to music- I will read, wander, and enjoy conversation. I will listen to my own thoughts and the sounds of life around me.

David

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Music in movies is mostly like f*ing wall paper AND it seems as if the players are mostly hired for how cheap they are (especially a problem in film) and then multitracked to imply an orchestra. They even hire crap ones and then use Antares auto tune to fix it. Christ. Even in documentaries where the subject matter should be enough to get the emotion, they slather it with f*ing strings. I hear it so much I can't listen to most music, which used to be a pleasure. OOOH While I am at it, would Channel 4 and BBC2 documentary makers STOP USING DJ SHADOW in your crappy documentaries. Music. Yech.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Well, I was going to, but then I was forced to play a mix for a client with a musician in the room and it was either play the music or get fired.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: In a modern world where (almost) everything is permitted, we need to be encouraged to deny ourselves things we take for granted. NO MUSIC DAY Seems to me a playful and inspired way to think and appreciate that which we take for granted.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Well, it's dusk already. I spent some of the day sleeping and dreamt bucketloads. I rested up pretty good so got my senses all keened up. So I've been listening to the sounds more and finding the music in them - cars going by, footsteps going up & down the hill, white noise hum of the fridge, Brighton beach tides making their roar up the road, birdsong in the chill. I contacted everyone I knew encouraging them to document their experiences today with or without music, cause I reckon most people don't know it's going on. Am gonna collect the results & put em somewhere like a blog to see what went down.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: becuase i am drowning in the stuff, the bank plays muzak for heavens sake, kids on public transport playing sub standard mp3's , making the sound of a kitten farting in a tin can into a sound battle, it's hardly like the old analogue reggae soundsystem battles though, they actually had bass.
Enough is enough, piped muzak everywhere. Music on every advert. Films set hundreds of years ago even have an eighties soundtrack. Halifax Building Society using some whack UK hip hop drivel, enough !
Music to urinate too, had enough, I don't listen to music to drown out the voices, yes, it's a mad world, let's not make it madder.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: This is the lamest idea I've heard.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: I won't be. This is rediculous. Muisc is the largest emotive communication tool for our species.
It's the only constant in our existence. The power to soothe, the power to motivate, the power to charm, the power to romance, the power to anger, the power to question.
Music should never ever stop.

What a rediculous idea.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: The world of my work attic is blissful without piped tunes - only dogs barking, planes growling, cars burring in the distance, the rattle and clatter of letterboxes and startled birds and a breeze playing through the trees like violins. Who needs iPods? We are surrounded by music if we only care to listen.
Now there's a crescendo of rain and a hint of percussion boiling in the clouds. Who can work with all this going on? No Music Day means better music, music that we arrange...

Adam Horovitz
21/11/2006

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: last year I realized that I had music on all the time, that I was not really listening to it, and that it was simply a way of escaping from my life. I was uncomfortable with my thoughts and with silence. After banishing the tv/computer/stereo, and over a week's period had NO music or ONLY the music out of my mind, I have never fully gone back. Music means more now, I listen more. The only time I use it for background now is in the car to keep me awake on late night's driving back from rehearsals. I feel a lot better about music, my brain, and myself.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: enjoying the silence. I just heard about this, it's a great idea.

Erik

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I live and work on the coal face of music, earning a meagre living - im not complaining - i've been around the world and played in most countries, but week after week, year after year, listening to components, presets, pads, loops, notes, voices and compositions - ears tired... and also the seemingly endless DJ sets - hours and hours of them - requests for a person's aspirations of a good night out - just once a week, the break from the hell of full time employment to pay taxes and only the interest on credit cards and morgages; the system of rabid venture capital that makes an agressive Australian bank the owner of the Thames and drains it dry while back home they are having a 1000 year drought; paid dj monkey's like me pushing buttons for peanuts or the converse when im paid 1000x local wages for 1 hours work because my name is a brand that attracts 10 times the amount of people; even the music on the radio this morning before Bill wen! t on - and after the Radio 4 fills... The no Music Day interview sandwiched by music.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: performing this score of abscence and will take my son Atom surf fishing for sea bass... and wait until 12.01 tomorrow to send out press releases, finish the remix, do the flyers for this weekend, make the calls, eat the audiosushi, and generally take a break from all the places there is music - which is almost everywhere... anyway, my eardrums are aching from last night's new track [empty] and the mix [anemic].

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Most of what's released today by major record companies is worthless, bandwagon-hopping garbage.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I need a detox. I want to purge myself of all the bland, irrelevant music I've been exposed to throughout my life. I want music to feel vital and sacred again.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: not listening to any music or making any music.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Because observing doesn't mean I have to participate. I shall be observing No Music Day by observing my muso male friends talking about it like it's something that matters. I however will be worrying about something more important.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: i hear too much tripe these days. I heard Ricky Martin earlier and had it in my head for 3 miserable hours. Taking your clothes off and going dancing in the rain indeed, I'll take away the pain and put a bullet through his brain. God

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: switching off all electrical items and ignoring the songs in my head

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I had been asking myself a number of questions about this issue when I read Bill's article in the OMM . I work for a kids music project and the idea of no music for a day seems almost unachievable but not without its appeal

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: actively avoiding playing , listening and as much as possible , overhearing any noises which seem to exhibit signs of melody or rhythm . I might meet my mate Neil for a pint and discuss a theoretical band , song or genre .

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Like the man that came up with the idea, I need to hear something new, there's still plenty of good music out there and there's even more rubbish, some of it considered by the music press and fans to be good, but that's another argument. The problem is I can't remember the last time that a new band or artist came along and just blew me away. I'm 34 now and I know that most of the new stuff isn't meant for me but that doesn't mean I can't like it. I love music so much and I'm beginning to wonder if the people making it even care about the music or if the image and money are more important. I could go on for hours and probably will in my head. Anyway, I hope someone makes a difference soon but I doubt it, at least we've got X factor on Saturday nights!

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Not playing music in the house or car or singing songs or humming or watching tv.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: i just came along such a thing, and i'm NOT doing this because i think it's something hip...it's just that i'll figure out how important sounds are for me by doing this.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: not listening to any kind of music, speaking less, staying home, and just reading. i'll try to have silence at all times. if i can't manage this, i'll only try to avoid noise! and at night, i'll go to a "no music day" event...

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: My ears need a rest from all of the punishment I put them through by listening to the grinding pulses of Powernoise, excessive bass frequencies of Electro and excessively amplified dB with which I monitor the synthesizers and drum machines I work around and with.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Listening to mindless drivel like Britney Spears.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by:
Abstaining from music to the best of my ability.
As I speed on the train observing the passing industrial northern Jersey wastes and cities, I will be pondering a greater good music could bring about but has of yet not, as well as what context would be required to enable such. I may have something backwards here, but I'll try and work it out on No Music Day, hopefully.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: Like all such special 'days' (religious festivals included), it can be observed and celebrated in any manner, including forthright opposition, insults, non-action and plain ignorance.
For me it feels very timely, just exactly what I need to do today.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Trying and failing to not listen to music.
Reading the illuminating and amusing statements on this page. Hoping everyone follows through on their statements.
Thinking about music and no-music, and the perfect, elegantly futile gesture of issuing a proclamation with absolutely no means or intention of backing them up.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I thought it was a daft idea but some of the criticisms are even dafter. If you can't imagine a day without it, then you really should try it. If you have an iPod, you need a day without it. Having (checks PC) 9000 tracks a couple of clicks away does threaten to devalue something priceless, though I do have days when I go without so it's not that much of a novelty.
I'm also going to make Wednesday an Unknown Music Day, where I can only listen to stuff like Filipino sea shanties, if such things exist.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: Not playing anything. If I get anything played at me I'm not going to worry too much - it'll probably be crap anyway.

I am (or am not) observing No Music Day because: I have no problems with my own concepts of music, noise, silence and sound in general but will use this day to revisit more difficult areas of listening that often get replaced on the discman with things more conducive to the bus journeys and lunchtimes of daily life.

I will (or will not) be observing No Music Day by: dipping in2 oft neglected items in my collection which when played in the presence of other people usually illicits the response "that's not music that's just a noise!" So this will involve dumping Miles 4 Merzbow, Sonic Youth 4 Stockhausen, Arthur Lee 4 Alvin Lucier or even Cage (rapper) 4 Cage (John) although not specifically 4:33 cuz that would be stretching a point too far.
