I will be observing No Music Day by: Going about my normal everyday, which includes listening to music. If you think it's all been done before you're not looking hard enough or you are just getting too old & getting started on a nostalgia trip. Thank You.

I am observing No Music Day because: I did a similar thing about a year ago.
It's arduous abstaining from listening to music for a day, but doing so makes one realize that music is equally as addictive as more harmful vices.

I am observing No Music Day because: i think it's a bl**dy good idea.
i have a lot to think about music-wise, and how am i gonna do that with a song stuck in my head?

I will be observing No Music Day by: not even touching my ipod or CD player or any of my instuments. and thinking. a lot.

I am observing No Music Day because: any day can be a no music day. For me it often is. I hate ipods. I don't watch television. I never sing in shower because I take baths. Music is potent and has to be handled with care. Can we have a no loud talking day instead? With law enforcement? Make it a year, actually.

I will be observing No Music Day by: not listening to my ipod. Hang on, I don't have one. Oh, I guess I'll have to forgo the earplugs in that case and just eavesdrop on tube.

I will be observing No Music Day by: There is no original music anymore - creativity has dried up. Kids think samples are the real thing...

I am observing No Music Day because: when I was a kid, music was magic. It was full of thousands of types of joy, from the slowest dirge to the brightest of pop trash. Now it all seems to be on an endless loop, the repeat button stuck down & each time the loop gets smaller & everything just seems more familiar & less special. So I'll be observing No Music Day to keep music magic.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Pulling a sickie from work (in a recording studio), wedging carrots in my ears & watching Murder She Wrote all day with the sound off.

I am observing No Music Day because: Nothing is without influence, but come on all these bands that write songs while sleepwalking through their older siblings record collections and adding nothing but an amnesiac thirst and respect for global marketing.
for Uncle Joe!!!

I will be observing No Music Day by: By cutting off the electricity supply and kidnapping all musicians, putting them in orange jumpsuits, gagging all singers, hummers, bus whistlers etc. All in 24hrs. My team of deaf elves will be there to help me. aurally fatigued.

I am observing No Music Day because: what was once a passion has now become a habit, a habit which I feel I need to break, if only for a day

I will be observing No Music Day by: abiding in complete silence (or a reasonable facsimile thereof)

I am observing No Music Day because: I have fucking great big elephant-like ears and NO MUSIC DAY presents a great opportunity to do something about it!

Unnecesary you say.. so is asking anyone not to listen to music, Knobheads!!

I will be observing No Music Day by: having my ears surgically removed.

I am observing No Music Day because: I want whatever I hear on the 22nd to be of more significance. I want whatever I hear from that moment on to create stronger feelings within me, whether it's love or hate, and I think that temporary deprivation help to do that.

I will be observing No Music Day by: I thought that would be obvious...

I am observing No Music Day because: it has a point, but I can see some immediate problems for most people who have the misfortune to work for a living. I spent 6 years working in a warehouse, like every other warehouse there is a radio permanently stuck to some regional FM station where the same 10 records are played every hour interspersed with inane advertising jingles and asinine vaguely right wing news bulletins. Trying to get your fellow workers to change the station for one day was met with shrieks of protest. Imagine trying to get them put up with no radio at all. You can picture their faces when you attempt to explain that to 're-engage with music' we should be listening to silence... Furthermore, watching TV is out of the question because music is inextricably part of the process. The Internet (especially MySpace) is off limits. Even walking down the street puts you at risk of experiencing unwanted melodic intrusion. Music is ubiquitous and as such has become cheapened and functional, somehow the magic has evapourated. Ipods have only made this worse because you can get exactly what you want when you want it. Instant gratification is the curse of our age. Living in a cave is the only escape, which is why I will be observing No Music Day by shutting out the world entirely.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Taking the day off work and locking myself in my house for 24 hours with only a pen and paper for company.

I am observing No Music Day because: the last great music revolution, acid house,is long gone, and there is no more music that means anything outside the selfish.Maybe there IS a revolution going on,and Im too old to even see it.Either way, like heroin,I hate music, but cant live without it.So for one day I can say, fuck you to music, and try to remember what I love about it

I will be observing No Music Day by: reading about music, probably a good Starvinksi BIO

I will be observing No Music Day by: I shall be observing No Music Day by listening to Radio 1 all day as there is no music to be found there...

I am observing No Music Day because: almost everyone below is missing the point. also through the white noise of detuned FM I wish to meditate on the question: What does Music mean to me today? I suspect the answer will come to me at 00:01...EVERYTHING.

I will be observing No Music Day by: actively avoiding listening to or making music during the day, though if I prevent my colleagues from playing their CDs or the radio I will likely be lynched, so instead I will tut and roll my eyes, like any other day really. At night I will be observing No Music Day by moving all TVs into the garden, tuning the digital radio tuners into Radio 4 and Talk Radio, and detuning all FM tuners.

I am observing No Music Day because: Absence makes the heart grow fonder, if such a thing is possible! I will also be intrigued to discover which songs I crave to hear after a 24 hour denial, and which pop into my head regardless!

I will be observing No Music Day by: Avoiding listening to any music, especially via commercials (no TV either) that have in many cases have stripped the magical essence of classic songs and used them for wholly inappropriate and offensive reasons!

I am observing No Music Day because: I am drowning in choice - my music collection is way too eclectic and has just become confusing. A day away from it may give me some perspective.

I will be observing No Music Day by: I was struggling with this. What is "no music"?
By running my iPod on random for 24 hours with no headphones connected I will be able to capture a playlist then I shall know what "no music" is

I am observing No Music Day because: it has been the soundtrack of my life for too long, and so much is profit-maximising 'pony'. Silence is valid; and so is bird-'song'.

I will be observing No Music Day by: trying to not tune into any music stations, reproducing any, or singing etc, and turning down radio and telly if any gets through, and going somewhere outdoors where there is none.

Bob

I am observing No Music Day because: i'm not sure. i think it's kinda bogus - where do you draw the line? if i'm thinking about music or playing a song over in my head (there's always something rolling around back there, usually the baby elephant walk) that to me is the same as physically listening to music. knocking ideas around about music is still engaging with music. chosing to not actively listen is still a form of participation. i'll give it a shot but if inspiration takes ahold of me i will fuck the whole thing off and act on it. life's too short and there's too much to do.

I will be observing No Music Day by: shutting down www.infinitechug.com for 24 hours.

I am observing No Music Day because: This will enable me to appreciate the fact that silence is better than the vast majority of music today. There are, in fact, several exceptions for which I will make allowance - hence the "majority".

I will be observing No Music Day by: Dancing to no music at all. By myself.

I am observing No Music Day because: Music has become so diluted, there are no second albums anymore because someone has already come along and made someone elses second record before they have released it, because I feel like there are no treats anymore, because people only listen to an album once then download it onto their archives never to be listened to again, too much dilution through a mass of mass....bu at least we are not in the britpop and post britpop years, I think I moaned even more then..

I will be observing No Music Day by: shutting myself in a writting down all the memories past and present has given me and reflect

I am observing No Music Day because: Well, I'm not observing no music day. See above. Interesting that you give people an opportunity to 'make a statement'... and upon clicking on the appropriate link, the assumption is made that they will be observing no music day. I wanted to make a statement to the contrary. I'll be making an effort to make as much music as possible on the day. You: easy way out. easy answer. inactive. negative. protest by inaction. easy. easy. easy. meaningless. easy. MAKE SOME FUCKING MUSIC INSTEAD.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Actually, I will NOT be observing no music day, because, in my view the way to make music meaningful is not to abstain from it. No music day is in fact the most unimaginative, negative way possible of making music meaningful, and of achieving your objectives, noble though they are.

I am observing No Music Day because: good music is alive and well. but i listen to music so much that i am actually bored of it. even if i can detatchedly recognise that it's good, it doesnt make me feel like it used to. i abstained from my favourite band for 3 weeks and afterwards...boom! so i am hoping i can rediscover the whole of music in the same way on nov 22nd. also i think it will be an interesting test of willpower, of which i have none. we shall see...

I will be observing No Music Day by: not listening to music...?

I will be observing No Music Day by: I stopped listening to any music since 2002. Nada. I think the music scene has something cultish about it. "Brighteyes"? he makes me puke. Please. Music's dead to me. Maybe I'm dead inside. Last time I went to a concert, I had the overwhelming impression that I was being manipulated into worshipping the faux-genius idol on stage, and I walked out (left my date too).

I am observing No Music Day because: I like no-days, although they frighten me as much as anyone else. Shut the pubs and shops ten times a year. What are all those people doing down town on sunday afternoon? Buying the same socks and cds they could buy on saturday or monday probably. And, people, unplug your i-pods! The city makes more interesting noises than corporate pop.

I will be observing No Music Day by: turning off the music in the restaurant, listening to the dreaded sound of cutlery on plates instead. This is serious martyrdom stuff, I can tell you.

I am observing No Music Day because: Just wondering what it will be like to spend the whole day without hearing any music whatsoever.
It's probably going to be quite quiet.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Avoiding all forms of music, whether live, recorded, broadcast or otherwise. This means wearing earplugs wherever there is the slightest chance I may be in danger of being exposed to music.
This is going to be pretty hard as I teach music at a college...Shit...I'm going to have to get my students to observe No Music Day too. It's gonna be an interesting day....I'm going to need loads of earplugs too...

I am observing No Music Day because: I can read Adorno and get his point. I see (and hear) evidence of his theories around me everyday. Becasue i wonder what adverts would be like if they didn't have msuic on them.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Not listening to a record that i have listened to almost everyday since i was given a copy back at the end of April. Everytime i listen to it i love it a bit more. Perhaps having a day off will enhance that.

I am observing No Music Day because: Everything that gets in abundance gets cheap, deflated and unappreciated - taken for granted. One wouldn't think this would apply to a "thing" like music, but it does. And if you're addicted to music, that's not good either. The only thing worth getting addicted to is air (by Bach.....!) No, just kidding.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Not listening to music, try at least. And also observing others to see whether they a) have caught the message b) actually take it seriously.

I am observing No Music Day because: I love music so much.

I will be observing No Music Day by: listening to music, music is the world to me and my mood is dependent on music, bad music makes my mood bad and good mosic makes me in a good mood. I use hours aday listening to and discovering and looking for new music. I can see that many people like this idea but it is not for me.

I am observing No Music Day because: I will not participate. No Music Day is silly... plus it coincides with No Pants Day, which requires music for the customary No Pants Day Dance and that would not be the same without the song to go with it.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Doing my usual routine for that day.

I am observing No Music Day because: As Sting once put it: "True spirituality is found in silence, music only serves to enhance silences." God speaks to us, but we are to noisy to hear it. Also, my ears need a bloody rest, plus I will be cramming for my history-finals, so no distractions will be a welcome thing.

I am observing No Music Day because: it s good to be home alone, for a moment. Because the saturday night lasts such a long time, so many years, and i can t dance anymore. But you can hear music so easily in any sound. There are no NO MUSIC DAYS.

I am observing No Music Day because: Even though i am young, i can appriciate that music is something that should be respected. It is a personal and beautiful thing. It shouldn't be trivialised by becoming the soundtrack to an otherwise dull day. In a nutshell, i believe that No Music Day could help preserve the sacredness of music.

I will be observing No Music Day by: probably physically restraining myself from picking up my guitar, and walking out of any room with music playing.
Although i believe this may be a hard pledge to maintain in future years, as i plan to pay the bills by recording and producing music. It's worth a shot anyway!

I am observing No Music Day because: It made me laugh. Seriously, one of the loveliest ways of communication between human beings? What's next? No talking day? Not-being-friendly day? No breathing day? Music makes the world turn round, and people creating a day without music are prone to locking away in a nuthouse, IMO.

I am observing No Music Day because: some music matters and I want to remind myself why

I will be observing No Music Day by: going to find somewhere silent, on my own, where there is no risk of ipods, shameless advertising, mg cars and boy racers blasting hard house, utterly banal and pointless myspace acts with 7000 indifferent 'friends', or seeing a previously admirable band's soul drip onto the floor as they perform on the sharon osbourne show.

I am observing No Music Day because: Most music seems banal and pointless, obviously there are great recordings out there and being done but. Music is now a commodity to be consumed like a fashion accessory, completely vaccuous and all image no substance. I hope that by observing no music day we can make a statement about the above. And perhaps I may find some much needed inspiration.

I will be observing No Music Day by: By trying to avoid hearing any music at all. And contemplating whether any new muisc can actually be made without recycling the old.

I am observing No Music Day because: Real music is being obscured by ubiquitous bite-size emoticon sound that impersonate passion and feeling. All music is noise, but this music is only noise. Life has its own incredible sountrack. I intend to listen to it for one day. Then rise anew, rejoin the fray and party.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Dreaming of hotels, restaurants, football grounds, TV programmes, shopping malls, mobile ringtones and firework displays failing miserably for the lack of loud meaningless drivel pumping out at me for absolutely no good reason AT ALL. PARDON? EH!?

I am observing No Music Day because: CDs and their packaging can now be recycled. I no longer have to throw them from the window like a frisbee.
The European market for music CDs is rapidly expanding: almost 2.9 billion compact discs were produced in Western Europe in 1998. While this means that there is , for example, a huge range of high quality European pop music available, it also means that there are problems if people produce CDs that I don't like.
In response to growing environmental issues, a UK company, Polymer Reprocessors of Merseyside, has created a specialist system to decollate and recycle compact discs. As a result, 100 per cent of all materials from cased CDs are recycled for use in new applications. The Company's high security system removes the need to use landfill, incineration or creative disposal as part of the process and is already being used in the UK by the three largest international music companies whose artist roster have clearly been filling landfill sites faster than anyone else.
In addition to providing a cost effective, entertaining and environmentally friendly method of disposal, the system produces high quality crystal polystyrene pellet used in the manufacture of such product as CD cases and artificial wood.
Polycarbonate derived from the discs themselves is currently being used in alarm panels and lighting lenses. The Company has a fully auditable security system, tracking discs through all stages of the process, from decollation through to the point where their data is destroyed, at which stage certificates of destruction are issued to the manufacturers.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Selecting 5 cds I am sick of listening to, hearing about, or even looking at, and I will post the cds to:

On arrival the cds will be destroyed and 100% of the parts will be recycled. I will spend the rest of the day enjoying life without music.

I am observing No Music Day because: I cannot listen to music too often. It affects my nerves and makes me want to say sweet nothings and stroke the heads of men who live in a dirty hell and can still create such beauty. But these days you can't go around stroking people's heads lest your hand be bitten off. You have to smash them over the headsmash them without mercy even though in theory we are against every form of oppression of mankind . . . ours is a hellish task.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Arming myself with a knife or a gun then lying in wait outside the homes of the poets and artists and musicians and stabbing or shooting them until they are dead.

I am observing No Music Day because: I thought it was because I've got older (I'm not old yet). Music sounds like wallpaper (most of it) - a tired piece of chewing gum with no flavour. Same old same old. Unless it's heart-felt. Listened to Georges Moustaki the other day (wasn't my CD) - I was touched by the oldness, the rounded character of the poetry (leave me alone if I don't make sense). Palpable atmosphere - I could sense myself falling in love with the man's ability to tell a story - crap maybe (I don't care anymore). How about improv? There's something in it - can't bare the shallowness of the 3 and a half minute sound byte - too predictable - feel like topping myself if music can't send me into paroxizms (can't spell) of enlightenment no more - maybe we can give birth to something else through this insurrection. Hope so.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Not playing music unless I do so by accident

I am observing No Music Day because: The comodification of what has given my life meaning seems to be stripping the impact of what should be the most powerful medium available. Music should not be understood principally as the theme to a computer game, film or tv show. A greater appreciation of silence will perhaps bring us a more whole understanding of the power of music.
After all, it is the silence between the notes which makes the piece...

I will be observing No Music Day by: Thinking about the nature and purpose of music in my life.

I am observing No Music Day because: So I can value music - if familiarity breeds content, then surely the opposite is true.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Well it will be difficult - if you take John Cage's 4'33" into consideration, all sound is music. But then it came to me - wear my Sennheiser headphones, but don't attach them to an iPod, walkman, or any other sound source. It will partially ruin the ambient sounds around me as well. It's either that, ot sleep through the day, but the risk with that is that dreams don't recognise a "No music day"

I am observing No Music Day because: I think we forget just how much music affects our lives. Its hard to go a whole day without some ditty playing somewhere in the background. Im a huge music fan and it wont hurt to starve myself of the notes of the western scale just once in awhile. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Or is that Absinthe makes your bark louder?.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Not playing my guitar, by not listening to any music whatsoever, not muting the start and end of TV programmes. Clearing my head of all tunes that circle around my head.

I am observing No Music Day because: it's an excellent way of finding perspective about how stagnant music has become.

I will be observing No Music Day by: not going into University as I am a music student, not listening to music, not playing music, just musing music.

I will be observing No Music Day by: I'll be trying not to listen to music, but it's hard because there'll be music coming out of car stereos and shops and peoples mouths. I guess I could take the day off work, but then a car may pass playing music, or birds might sing outside. Maybe I should buy some earplugs, but then I will be hearing music in my head. Does that count?
I'll give it a try though.

I am observing No Music Day because: i do not need a day of no music, because it is always in my head. i do not need a day without music because i know how valuable music is to my soul. i do not need a day without music bucause if i had a day without music i may kill my boss. my headphones keep her inane chattering from getting in, therefore saving her own boring life.

I am observing No Music Day because: pop music - maybe all music - works in the service of THE SPECTACLE. Read Guy Debord if this doesn't make sense...

I will be observing No Music Day by: forcing anyone who sings "Happy Birthday" to me to pay royalties to Michael Jackson. I believe he owns the rights. And, yes, Nov 21 is my birthday.

I am observing No Music Day because: Sometimes, no music is far better than having to hear the same track on the radio for the third time and having no music all day adds a cut off point to be reckoned with.
Celebrate in silence!

I will be observing No Music Day by: Not turning my stereo on and leaving my mp3 player alone. It's a Tuesday, and we all know that nothing really happens on a Tuesday unless you make it happen.

I am observing No Music Day because: FUCK THIS!

I will be observing No Music Day by: This is the most looney crap I've ever heard. I'm a musician so this is quite farfetched. Music is soulfood, it can change lives. Music saves lives. You could be killing someone by participating in this rediculous charade.

I will be observing No Music Day by: No recoreds of mine will be played. No generic organised sound will distract me from my thought. I will use this, what many people would see as a constriction, as a space where I am free to think about what I want; both from music and in life.

I am observing No Music Day because: music is devalued and cheapened by its availability through recordings and by the lack of investment and effort required of the listener to procure and consume said recordings.
meanwhile, in the city, recorded music is unavoidable and unceasing. i have found that this, and the advent of the iPod as musical supermarket [shoplifting] trolley [retrieve and consume - anything at all - no effort required] has driven me right away.
the modern world has become musically obese on a diet of junk sound.
HOW TO MAKE MUSIC SPECIAL AGAIN - DIET TIPS:
- don't listen to music where the performer is not in the same room as you
- restrict music consumption to live music only
- avoid music from loudspeakers amd headphones
- if you listen to music recordings, make sure you have made some effort so as to deserve to - like you might record yourself playing music; or do some work to earn the money to pay for the record.
you'll undoubtedly hear less music, but it will sound better and you'll feel both the affect and effect much more.

I will be observing No Music Day by: in full support of the idea of a 'no music day', i will make sure i play music with friends on the following day - 22 nov.

I am observing No Music Day because: it would be absolutely incredible if even 10% of the constant drone of music could just be removed. also, i fancy a change in career, so doing this will probably get me sacked, which will speed things along a bit

I will be observing No Music Day by: not turning on the mixing desk at the music venue i engineer sound at

I am observing No Music Day because: Lets face it 95% of music out there is forced upon you, its usually manufactured by a big corporation to pull in the crowd followers making them mega bucks, and lets face it, it sucks. We don't want it, and if people were given real music as opposed to the generic stuff we'd all be a lot happier and have a lot more soul. Music makes things happen.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Not putting the radio on, setting a normal alarm clock to wake me up.

I am observing No Music Day because: ..of that very fact. We ignore these sounds in favour of what our 'taste' tells us, we reject them for the songs radio DJs tell us are the best song of the year, for music that a critic we have never met considers the creme de la creme. We ignore the world around is and replace it with synthesised mush, be it a Mozart Piano Concerto, a Brash Punk Band or a Feel Friendly pop tune.
Whilst i do not (and will never) consider the sounds i will hear on that sunday to be music (no matter what Cage says) i do believe what many people who have signed up to this cause believe- there can be too much of a good thing:-music is the most soul inspiring and moving of forces known to man. It is also sometimes the dullest and blandest form of entertainment avaliable.Perhaps as a society we should realise this from time to time.

I will be observing No Music Day by: ...whoa hold on..context first. I am a music student at huddersfield. This year i am stewarding at the 26th annual Contemporary music festival (world famous don't you know) and i've already signed up for several concerts of high class contemporary music, including a near midnight performance of Lucier's Still Lives on the night of the 21st.
Therefore, i will be holding/observing No Music Day on Sunday the 3rd of December, due to scheduling problems.
I will take between 1, but no more than 5 tape recorders into my nearby wood and record the sound of nature-birds speaking, river flowing, leaves rustling, trees creaking, mud squelching and all the sounds that the world holds for us that we ignore the beauty of on a daily basis.
I will then takes these tapes back to my house and play them on relay for the rest of the day.

I am observing No Music Day because: I've said it all above. good luck to everyone.

I will be observing No Music Day by: avoiding all music. this is a fantastic idea. I love music, always have but recently, despite having a huge music collection, spend ages choosing something to listen to. I feel jaded by music. It's all too accessible, I'm rarely surprised anymore and need a break from it. It'll be interesting to see how the day goes. I may even extend it, or have a 'music fast' more often.

I am observing No Music Day because: Only in lands of the archaic and austere would I be in this situation. But I want to make the most of this day, a day to reflect on all things musical that I love, to see how much music moves me and makes me think. I want to come out of this day knowing what I want to listen to - what's will be even useful for me to listen to, and to give myself direction in what I'll pick up in the record shop.

I will be observing No Music Day by: Leave the walkman at home. Fingers in ears past blasting radios. Tutting at music teacher.
